If music could be recorded in black & white it might very well sound like this new album by Richard Lindgren and Fredrik Carlquist. Just like a black & white photo can add a dreamy beauty to a realistic and sometimes even rough picture there is a certain sincerity to a naked recording where you can hear the vibrations of the room. Where some things are left untouched in order to give the listener the sensation of being right there with the musicians - in your own living room. The music on this album is truly un-plugged music recorded in living rooms, clubs and bedrooms with Richard singing without any amplification with the rest of the band. And that is what it takes to record a singer like Richard Lindgren - catch him at his best! He like few lives up to what he sings about and he sings about his own life - first hand information from half a block close to the edge and after half a life playing small clubs. He knows how to make a room really sound - and you’d better know that when you are playing for the tip. A real musician by the old meaning! The same thing could be said about Carlquist and the rest of the players on this album. They have all spent a big part of their lives playing acoustic music with different bands just calling songs. And that is exactly how the music on this album came about. Richard calling a song and the other musicians chiming in and after an arrangement was down all tracks were cut in one take almost exclusively. So far so good, business as usual, it was easy and it was fun - so it went on for a decade. The challenge had more to do with other things. Like by hand moving 70 kilos of recording equipment through Barcelona’s public transport system, calming upset neighbours, cooking for eight persons when you have drum kit in the kitchen and solving other problems lurking under the term production. Never the less it all carried on until there was so much material that something needed to be done. Carlquist, who is also the producer of this project, and Richard decided that what needed to be done was post-production (e.g more problems) in order to add shine to some of the numbers and to finish some of the early unfinished attempts. They made a selection of songs and Fredrik wrote arrangements and brought more players to the house to record more music on about a half of the material. By the fall of 2017 everything was in place and he had finished mixing and mastering the ten tracks that now finally will be presented to a wider audience under the title “Spanish Incidents”. The recordings adequately dates from 2007-2017 and it’s fascinating to see how the lyrics that Richard choose to use over this extended period of time actually creates a story, like chapters in a novel. So what does the music sound like from a producer’s perspective?
Perhaps something like; “Ten unhappy endings in black & white just enough hand- colorised to make a romantic soul get out of bed in the morning wanting to hear them again and even, hopefully, again and again. This is our music the way we love playing it and as we hear it doing so. This is fragments of our lives in words and music. We sincerely hope you will like it! “
