10. The Giant Ground Sloth
You’ve probably, at some point, been caught up by the cuteness of sloths!! I mean, you can’t help but like them, all they do is climb through trees, and spend most of their lives sleeping- but their ancestors were entirely different beasts altogether.

9. Cave Bears
Cave bears lived across Europe and Asia until about 24,000 years ago. As the name would suggest, they are thought to have spent most of their lives in caves- but no-one knows this for sure. They got their name because the majority of their fossils have been found in caves. They were distant relatives of the brown bear and were a similar size- weighing up to 2,200 pounds. Imagine a sloth and a bear weighing the same thing!

8. Aurochs
Aurochs were one of the earliest species of cow, but they were nothing like the ones we see today. They were as tall as elephants, were incredibly powerful, and had giant horns that made them a significant threat. They were, for many thousands of years, the largest land mammals in Europe!! Unfortunately for them, increasing populations of humans who hunted them for food meant the end of the Auroch.

7. The Megalania
The Megalania prisca was a huge and deadly monitor lizard that lived in Australia until about 40,000 years ago. They grew to up to 30 feet long, and their name literally means ‘Ancient Giant Butcher’…. It was one of the dominant predators on the continent, and they were extremely venomous. But did they actually go extinct all those years ago?

6. Mastodon
Mastodons were large elephant-like animals that lived across North and Central America until about 10,000 years ago. Their herds roamed through forests, where they grazed on the vegetation. Remains of at least 4 different species of Mastodon have been found, with the American Mastodon being both the most famous, and last surviving type.

5. Arctic Ground Squirrel
Arctic Ground squirrels first came to prominence during the last ice age, with nests having been found that are more than 90,000 years old! Remember from the movie ICE AGE? That little squirrel was nutty but he could survive everything!!

The giant short-faced bear prowled across North America until about 11,000 years ago. It lived at a time when there was tough competition from animals like the dire wolf and American lion, but most would have stayed out of the way of this bear…

New Zealand is famous for its unusual wildlife- because of its isolation and because of the lack of many different types of predators that are common in other places. Because of this, many species of birds flourished before humans began to hunt them, and one of the strangest ones was known as the Moa.

Sabre Tooth Cats were another species that lived worldwide until around 11,000 years ago. The name is actually misleading, because they weren’t related to modern cats, and actually have closer links to marsupials. They were very large creatures, with bear-like bodies, and the recognisable curved canine teeth that protruded from their mouths.

Probably the most famous of ice age animals, there have been some mysterious encounters with the supposedly extinct woolly mammoth. In the 1500s until about the 1800s explorers in Alaska and Siberia reported seeing giant, hairy elephants roaming around. Native tribes would report there were hairy beasts that slept against trees but were very rare.

9. Flamethrower Gauntlets
Fire is often a superpower that many people want to have despite its destructive capabilities. Usually, the problem with literal firepower is control. So for inventor Allan Pan, he wanted to give himself, and potentially others, a gadget that would ensure that the person would have control over the fire that they "make". So, he made punch-activated flamethrowers that would only work when certain criteria were met.

In this day and age there are many items that can make you "bulletproof" to a certain extent. However, most things, including Kevlar, SWAT shields, and more only protect a certain part of your body. The ideal scenario would be where “bullet proof” meant that our whole body could be protected from bullets. Former Mythbuster and grand inventor Adam Savage took on the challenge of making a literal suit of armor that would be bulletproof. But more specifically, he decided to make the Iron Man Mark II armor.

Many tech companies have implemented strategies that are meant to allow users of various electronic devices to control them with simpler methods, including face recognition software or using voice commands. But, one company decided that they wanted to take that a step further and make it even easier. So they made the Thalmic Labs’ Myo Armband.

All of us have adrenaline and when it kicks in, it can give us a rush of extra strength needed to do incredible things. Flight continues to be one of the biggest things that humans want in terms of super powers. Invisibility is right up there with flying for one of the top super powers that people want. While it may be seen as a pretty sneaky power, since why do you want to be invisible anyway? In southeastern Alberta, Canada is a geological feature that, when viewed from above, looks like something far beyond the grooves in the valley that it's made from. Known as the badlands guardian, it looks just like a human wearing a headdress- the surprising thing is, though, that this hasn't been carved by human hands at all.

That was until infrared satellite images of the region were taken, and revealed not only the location but the layout and remains, of Tanis!! Yay!!

5. A Fire in the Ocean
NASA has a number of satellites that continuously look at the earth, but one noticed something quite strange in 2017. Its probe, the Suomi NPP, has thermal imaging capabilities and was taking images of Brazil to monitor the development of forest fires across the country. Each hotspot can be seen on the map in red- which shows how many fires are taking place at any time.

4. Giant A Hole
Finally, here's a perfect example of a neighborly rivalry that’s been caught on camera, and one that can still be seen on Google Maps! Occasionally, someone finds a hilarious image that the satellite imaging has picked up on, and that’s what happened when one user was looking at Sequim, Washington. As you can see, in the field is probably the world’s biggest A-hole!

3. Hurricane Florence
Hurricane Florence was a deadly storm that hit the Carolinas in September of 2018, resulting in the deaths of 5 people, and leaving hundreds of thousands without power. Hurricanes contain huge amounts of energy, but it’s only when you see them imaged from above that you get an idea of just how large and powerful they are.

2. The Desert Atlantis

10. The Nippo Maru
The Nippo Maru was a 350-foot transport ship that was originally a passenger and cargo freighter, but was seized in 1941 by the Japanese military. On February 17th, 1944, the 2,754 ton ship was at anchor to the east of Dublon island, carrying firewood, water, armaments, and a tank… when it was sunk by three 500-pound bombs from the USS Essex.

9. A Giant Stone Sculpture
In 2013, archaeologists discovered a stone sculpture more than 700 feet beneath the waters of the Sea of Galilee. The conical pile of cobbles and boulders was, according to researchers, definitely manmade, and is 230 feet in diameter. Some of the boulders are as big as 3 feet long, but there are no obvious signs of cutting or chiseling.

8. The Yonaguni Monument
Another strange underwater structure is known as the Yonaguni monument, which lies off the coast of Yonaguni; the southernmost of Japan’s Ryukyu islands. Since they were discovered in 1987, many have claimed they are actually man-made steps and there is much debate on whether this monolith is actually a natural formation.

7. Jurassic-Era Microbes
The sediment beneath the world's oceans is rich with microbial life, with more than 90 percent of all unicellular organisms being thought to live there. It's an area of acute interest to researchers and, in 2012, one team announced something totally unexpected.

6. A Train Graveyard
On to New Jersey, now, and a surprising discovery that was made just off the coast. In 1985, an oceanographer was mapping the seabed with a magnetometer, when it returned some strong readings. At first, it wasn't clear what he had found because the water was so murky, but on further dives, it became clear that this was the final resting place of two steam engines, 90 feet beneath the surface.

5. Giant Crucifix
There’s a place in Petoskey, Michigan, that attracts thousands of visitors a year, but this is no usual sightseeing tour. 20 feet beneath the surface is an 1800 pound statue of the crucifixion, which has been carved from Italian marble. So the story goes, the statue was originally commissioned in the late 50s or early 60s as a memorial to a young man who had died in the east of Michigan.

4. Manganese Nodules
There’s still plenty we don’t know about the underwater realm, and there’s one mystery that still confuses researchers despite being found throughout the world’s seas- manganese nodules. The metal lumps have been found in every ocean, but are most common in the Pacific.

3. The Baltic Sea Anomaly
When explorers were mapping the floor of the Baltic Sea in 2011 in search of a shipwreck, they found something quite unexpected. Known as the Baltic Sea Anomaly, the object is 300 feet beneath the surface, around 100 feet long, and 26 feet tall. There have been a number of suggestions as to what it might be- such as a UFO or remains of an ancient city, and its resemblance to the Millenium Falcon can’t be denied!

2. The Underwater City of Cuba
In 2001, researchers were working with the Cuban government to search the seabed for evidence of long lost Spanish treasure galleons, when they found evidence of what they believed to be an underwater city.
The objects that showed up in their scans were between 2,000 and 2,500 feet deep and included symmetrical and geometrical stone shapes

10. Helike
Often called the ‘real Atlantis’, Helike was a Greek city that suffered a in 373 BC. Surprisingly, there are actually far more accounts of Helike than Atlantis, and these records are what led to the ruins being discovered!!

9. Urkesh
It was once a major hub for the Near Eastern Hurrian civilisation and thought to be the home of a primordial, but the city of Urkesh was lost beneath the sands of what is now northern Syria. Very little was known about the city or the people who built it, but this all changed in the 1980’s when archaeologists were finally able to uncover it.

8. Xanadu
The Chinese city of Xanadu flourished between 1256 and 1368, where it functioned as the summer capital of the country. It was built by the grandsons of Genghis Khan and, at it peak, was home to more than 100,000 residents. It was once visited by Marco Polo, but was ultimately destroyed in 1369 by the invading Ming army, and was abandoned for centuries.

7. Thonis-Heracleion
Heracleion used to be the gateway to the Mediterranean, a trade hub for the Egyptian empire through which goods from Greece and elsewhere would enter the country. Located near Alexandria, Egypt, Helen of Troy famously fled to Heracleion with her abductor/lover Paris.

6. Sigiriya
The ruins of the ancient city of Sigiriya, meaning ‘Lion Rock’, can be found atop a 660 foot tall column of rock in central Sri Lanka. The site was chosen for a fortress by King Kasyapa, and he had his palace built on the summit. Surrounding the sides were colourful frescoes and, on a plateau about halfway up, a giant gateway that was in the shape of a lion.

5. Dvaraka
The lost ancient city of Dvaraka was mentioned in the Mahabharata, one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India, as well as other sacred texts. According to the text, it was located in the capital of the area of Gujarat, and it was one of the seven sacred cities of Hinduism. It was described as being on the coast, near the Raivataka mountain range, and as the only city on earth that was studded with gems.

4. Lost City
Colombia’s lost city, known as Ciudad Perdida in Spanish, has no known original name yet and it was just always called the “Lost City”. Built in 800 AD, 650 years before Machu Picchu in Peru, it’s in the Sierra Nevada region, surrounded by dense jungle, and is thought to have been a commercial trade centre for the civilisation that lived there at the time.

3. Leptis Magna
There are five world heritage sites in Libya, but the most famous and historically significant is Leptis Magna. Hardly the most accessible of places, this forgotten Roman city, that looks over the Mediterranean, was enlarged during the reign of Septimius Severus between 193 and 211. It regularly had to be defended against Berber incursions over the next few hundred years, but was finally abandoned following the Muslim invasion in 647.

2. Pyramid City of Caral
One of the least known, but most prolific, ancient societies was the Norte Chico civilisation that lived in the Supe region of Peru. They were the first known empire of the Americas, living around 5,000 years ago. Their capital, the pyramid city of Caral, is one of the most incredible archaeological sites on the continent.

The Lost City of the Monkey, also known as La Ciudad Blanca, is a mythical place that is said to be in the eastern jungle of Honduras. Explorers have searched for the city since the 16th century, when rumours of its existence came to the attention of the Spanish invaders.

8. Blood From a Stone
You may not be able to get blood from an actual stone, as the saying goes, but you can get it from Pyura chilensis, a type of sea creature found on the Western coast of South America. At first glance, the sea creature found off the coast of Chile and Peru looks like your average grey stone. But if you cut through its hard, rock-like exterior shell, you will find blood-red organs, skin and muscles.

7. Devil’s Tooth
Imagine going for a leisurely walk, only to stumble upon a bright white mushroom covered in crimson droplets. Don’t be scared, you have just discovered the Devil’s Tooth. Also known by the name strawberries and cream, the Devil’s Tooth certainly doesn’t taste sweet, and is in fact said to have a bitter taste. It is also different from other fungi, that grow spores on feathery gills on the underside of a cap.

6. Psychedelic Salt Mines of Russia
You don’t have to stay above-ground to find surprises in nature. In fact, one dazzling display was discovered 650 feet below a Russian city. At first glance, the salt mines of Yekaterinburg look like a tie-dyed t-shirt from the Summer of Love, but the twisting psychedelic patterns are really a remnant of ancient oceans.

5. Skull Pods
If the Devil’s Tooth fungus isn’t the kind of thing you want in your garden, you might want to give the snapdragon a try. These flowers are extremely popular.
Named for the flower’s shape, which looks like a dragon’s head, the flower looks even more unique after it blooms. And when you squeeze the sides of the flower, you can make the dragon’s mouth open!

4. The Trees of Slope Point
On the southernmost tip of an island in New Zealand, strong air currents batter the shoreline. So it is no surprise that the land takes a particularly brutal beating. However, nature has learned to adapt, and one of the more curious results are the trees found on Slope Point. Trees on the southernmost point of South Island have taken on a distinctively windswept look, with the roots and branches perpetually warped and twisted against the current.

3. Petrified Lightning
Nature is beautiful but it can be equally as violent, and the powerful forces are none more evident than the effect achieved when lightning strikes sand. After lightning storms, strange tubes with jagged edges can sometimes be found on beaches, in dunes or on mountain tops. These stone-type formations are the after effects of when lightning strikes the sand and melts the silica (or minerals) within.

1. Blood Falls, Antarctica
Discovered in Antarctica in the early 1900’s, Blood Falls is very unexpected. When explorers found that a river had stained a cliff with a dark red substance, they at first believed it was the result of a type of algae. But scientists at the University of Alaska Fairbanks did a little detective work and discovered the source of the red water was coming from deep below the icy surface.

10. Disappearance of Frederick Valentich
Fred Valentich was a young Australian pilot who was aiming to fly across the Bass Strait, a stretch of sea between the Aussie coast and the island state of Tasmania in 1978. Over the course of 5 minutes he described being followed at a distance of 4,500 ft (1372 m) by some sort of strange aircraft made of metal, that had 4 bright lights plus one green light on the exterior.

If blood suddenly started raining down from the sky, you might think you’d walked into a horror movie. Well if you live in the Indian state of Kerala that kind of thing happens a lot. But don’t worry, it’s not actually blood!! Not blood as such, but red-coloured rain that has become the subject of much speculation since it was first officially noticed in 2001.

10. The Star With 7 Earths
The search for exoplanets in other star systems, for the past decade, has revealed thousands of other worlds, but there’s one star with a particularly unusual setup. Known as the Trappist-1 system, named for the telescope in Chile that first detected 2 of the planets, there are a total of 7 Earth-sized planets orbiting the star. They are made of rock, are all closer to their star than the earth is to the sun, and could even be home to large volumes of water.

9. Moon Stripes
As we explore our own solar system in greater detail than ever before, researchers are continually discovering mysterious features in the most unlikely of places. NASA’s Cassini probe orbited Saturn between 2004 and 2017, where it studied both the planet itself and its moons. Images that were sent back of one of the moons, Dione, showed a series of long, narrow, bright stripes across the surface.

8. The ‘Egg’ Rock
As one of our closest neighbors, Mars has fascinated civilizations since its first discovery and, other than our own planet, it is the most explored place in our Solar System. While the search for life on the red planet has so far been a fruitless endeavor, NASA's Curiosity rover discovered something very unusual in 2016. Known as the ‘egg’ rock, this dark and smooth object stands out from the Martian landscape. It was found on the slope of Mount Sharp and, at first, was a complete mystery.

7. Hypervelocity Stars
The structure of the Universe, as we know it, relies on certain principles. One of which is that planets orbit around stars, and stars orbit around large central structures, that are thought to be supermassive black holes, to form what we call galaxies. There are some places where things don’t quite make sense, though. In the farther reaches of the Milky Way, for example, there are stars that move at a high enough speed to escape the gravitational pull of the galaxy.

6. Dust Moons
How many moons are there around the Earth? The obvious one, of course, is the one that’s responsible for the oceanic tides and illuminating the night sky, but the interaction of the gravitational forces between the moon and the earth causes something strange to happen. The moon and earth are constantly tugging at each other, but there are 5 points in space where their gravitational forces balance each other out.

5. Titan’s Magic Island
The largest of Saturn's moons is Titan- so big, in fact, that it's larger than the planet Mercury. It's been a source of interest for researchers and a focal point of the Cassini probe that recently investigated Saturn and its moons. Titan has large oceans that are made up of liquid methane and ethane, something that's possible because of the extreme temperatures there. It rarely gets above -290°F. (-179°C)

4. An Exomoon
The Kepler telescope changed the face of deep space exploration by discovering thousands of exoplanets before going out of service just last month, in October of 2018. While planets were discoverable by the effect their orbit has on the strength of light that’s seen from their star, there remain other objects that scientists wanted to be able to detect that don’t have such a noticeable effect- namely moons.

3. Gravitational Waves
Gravitational waves are the ripples in the fabric of space-time that are caused by some of the most powerful processes in the Universe. They were first theorized by Albert Einstein in 1916, but it would take almost 100 years for the waves to actually be seen. They were first identified in February of 2016 by a team of scientists who were looking at the merging of two black holes.

2. Oumuamua
Of all the space rocks that continually pass by our planet, one of the most interesting is Oumuamua or, to give it its official title, 1l/2017 U1. This cigar-shaped object was first discovered when it was 21 million miles away from Earth, and moving away from the sun.
