10. Disappearance of Frederick Valentich
Fred Valentich was a young Australian pilot who was aiming to fly across the Bass Strait, a stretch of sea between the Aussie coast and the island state of Tasmania in 1978. Over the course of 5 minutes he described being followed at a distance of 4,500 ft (1372 m) by some sort of strange aircraft made of metal, that had 4 bright lights plus one green light on the exterior.

9. Red Rain of Kerala
If blood suddenly started raining down from the sky, you might think you’d walked into a horror movie. Well if you live in the Indian state of Kerala that kind of thing happens a lot. But don’t worry, it’s not actually blood!! Not blood as such, but red-coloured rain that has become the subject of much speculation since it was first officially noticed in 2001.

The Wow Signal is probably the most appropriately-named radio signal from the stars in history! Astronomers working at the famous Big Ear telescope based at Ohio State University in 1977 recorded a very strange sound from space! It was a 72 second burst of radio waves and on the reading, the astronomer wrote Wow! Next to it in red pen!

8. Flying Tiger Line Flight 739
On March 14, 1962, a Lockheed L-1049 Super Constellation Propliner departed from Travis Air Force Base in California with 93 US Army Rangers, three South Vietnamese soldiers, and nine civilian flight crew members aboard. Charter flight 739 was operated by Flying Tiger Line on behalf of the Military Air Transport Service.

7. The Zanetti Ghost Train
On July 14, 1911, three newly-built Zanetti train cars carrying 100 passengers and six crew members departed from Rome, Italy. The first anticipated landmark was a recently constructed, one-kilometer-long tunnel that cut through the Lombard mountains. The train entered, but never exited, the tunnel.

5. The Witchcraft
In December 1967, a 23-foot luxury yacht named Witchcraft lived up to its name by vanishing off the Miami coast, near the edge of the notorious Bermuda Triangle. At the helm was hotel owner and experienced yachtman Dan Burack, joined by his friend, Father Patrick Horgan. The pair planned to view the holiday lights of the Miami shoreline.

4. The Luanda 727
On May 25, 2003, a decommissioned Boeing 727-223 aircraft began taxiing erratically down the runway at Quatro de Fevereiro Airport in Luanda, Angola, with its lights and transponder off and no communication between its operators and air traffic control. It took off without clearance, headed southwest toward the Atlantic Ocean, and was never seen again.

In November 2014, a company called Indian Potash Limited booked a cargo train parcel to transport compost from Andhra Pradesh to Uttar Pradesh. When the wagon failed to reach its destination, the owner of its contents contacted the railways. However, the public transporter was unable to track down the coach.

After a brief stint as a German trading vessel and being given to Great Britain as a World War I reparation, the SS Baychimo fell under the ownership of the Hudson Bay Company. It voyaged regularly across the Atlantic between Scotland and Canada, trading with Inuit tribes.

One user, who goes by “pixelpants,” noticed a silver car with a female driver pull into their driveway as he or she was putting dishes away. 8. BATTERSEA POWER STATION, LONDON
There are two identical decommissioned coal power generating stations at the Battersea Power Station in south London, which is located along the Thames River. The first station, known as Battersea A Power Station, was built in the 1930’s; the second, Battersea B Power Station, was constructed during the 1950’s.

7. WOLA GASWORKS, POLAND
The abandoned Warsaw Gasworks, also known as the Wola Gas Company, is one of Europe’s, and perhaps the world’s, most pristine examples of late 19th and early 20th century industrial architecture. You know, if you're into that sort of thing. The neoclassical structures that make up the complex were built in 1888. They were destroyed during World War II, in 1939, and were thereafter immobilized.

6. PATAREI PRISON, ESTONIA
On the outskirts of the Old Town of Tallinn on the north coast of Estonia lies Patarei Prison. It was originally built as a sea fortress in 1820, but was used as a high-security prison facility by the Soviets during their occupation of the country from 1944 to 1991, and was considered one of the scariest places in Estonia.

5. ARGENTIERA, SARDINIA, ITALY
Argentiera was a silver- and lead-mining town on the Italian island of Sardinia that thrived into the 1940’s. Silver had been mined here since the ancient era of the Romans and Phoenicians, and was an important commodity within the Roman economy.

4. GEAMANA, APUSENI MOUNTAINS, ROMANIA
Located near Geamana, the Rosia Poieni mine was once Europe’s second-largest copper mine and employed around 500 people. During the 1970’s, copper was discovered in the hills above the Romanian village of Geamana. In the spring of 1977, the villagers’ lives were turned upside-down, as representatives and prospectors working for the then-dictator Nicolae Ceausescu arrived and essentially told them to pack up and prepare to move elsewhere.

3. BURLINGTON BUNKER, ENGLAND
This 35-acre underground property in England was kept a complete secret from the public until it was decommissioned in 2004. Unbeknownst to even the local population, it was located 100 feet underneath the churches, homes, and cobblestone streets of Corsham, a quaint market town in Wiltshire. The already-existing set of limestone caves underneath the small city made it an ideal location for the bunker.

2. CIUDAD REAL CENTRAL AIRPORT, SPAIN
When you think of creepy abandoned places, one of the first things that probably comes to mind is an old, decrepit building. However, that’s not always the case. Located 120 miles (200 km) south of Madrid, Spain, the Ciudad Real Central Airport was in operation for just three years before it closed in 2012.

1. CZESTOCHOWA TRAIN GRAVEYARD, Poland
In the city of Czestochowa (Ches-to-kova) in Poland, there’s an abandoned train depot that was once a bustling transportation hub that connected the Warsaw-Vienna railway with the rest of Europe. The railway opened in 1846 and is one of the reasons the city became one of Russian Poland’s leading industrial centers.

10. Violet Sabrewing
One of the most abundant species of hummingbird in the Americas, the Violet Sabrewing, can be found in mountainous forests from southern Mexico all the way south to western Panama. While most people associate the word “hummingbird” with a tiny and dainty specimen, the Violet, is in actual fact, a large and spectacular birdie reaching the approximate size of a sparrow.

9. Iridescent Shark
If you’re wondering why you may have never heard of this shark before, it’s probably because it isn’t really a shark. It’s a species of shark catfish but looks kind of like a shark to some degree. They are native to rivers of Southeast Asia and are bred for their meat known as swai. They have been spreading around the world and environmental groups have begun to find them in rivers in Colombia, South America and they are very worried it could become a threat to endangered species.

8. Blue Morpho Butterfly
These winged beauties are labeled as one of the most emblematic and beloved of all the butterfly species because of their size and vivid blue coloring. These shimmering wings reflect the light making the Blue Morpho butterfly easy to spot in the Amazon Rainforest. They are found in forests throughout Central and South America, and at six inches long with a wingspan of about 20 centimeters, they are recognized as one of the largest butterflies in the world.

7. Sea Sapphire
These tiny critters look like gemstones flashing in the sun! Known as the Sapphirina copepod, they are also called the rice of the sea since they are at the bottom of the food chain! Some people think they are the most beautiful ocean creature in the world.

6. Cuckoo Wasp
Also known as emerald wasps, these guys definitely grab your attention, even though they are no larger than the average housefly. It moves fast and has a beautiful iridescent blue-green color. Unfortunately, the Cuckoo Wasp is actually a parasite, and just like the Cuckoo bird, they lay their eggs in the nests of other species, usually bees and other wasps. Hence the name.

5. Sunbeam Snake
Sunbeam snakes prefer humidity and dampness, and usually live in damp, loose soil near water, and are mostly found in Southeast Asia. These snakes are known for their highly iridescent scales, and while the head scales are made up of larger plates, the ventral scales are slightly smaller. They usually emerge at dusk to feast on amphibians, snakes, rodents, and carrion (so basically everything).

4. Peacock
If we are going to be technical, the correct terminology here would actually be Peafowl – where the male is the Peacock, and the female is called a Peahen. (But I wouldn’t really worry about that, because no one goes around saying “peafowl” anyway!

3. Paua Snail (Abalone)
Paua is a Maori name that is appointed to three species of edible sea snails. These sea slugs are most commonly found in shallow coastal waters along the rocky shorelines in New Zealand, Australia, Japan, the west coast of the US, and South Africa. The massive sea snails feed on seaweed and survive the strong ocean tides by clinging to rocks, using their large muscular foot.

2. Jewel Beetle
Jewel Beetles have been prized for their beauty since ancient times, especially in Asia. Their iridescence is their trademark, and these critters come in varying shades of red, blue, orange, green, yellow, and black. The beetle sheds its exoskeleton when it molts, revealing a brand new, sparkly outer plate!

1. Blue-ringed Octopus
Found in the coral reefs of the Indian and Pacific and oceans, from Japan all the way to Australia, the Blue-ringed Octopus may be tiny, but this little guy is one of the most venomous animals in the world!!
They can range from the size of a golf ball to the size of a human hand, and their brownish-yellow coloring helps them blend into their surroundings.

9. Life-Sized Decoys
A species of orb spider found living off the coast of Taiwan builds life-sized replica models of themselves to act as decoys for predators. These spiders decorate their webs with material such as parts of plants or the remains of their prey that is similar to their own coloring and make these strange-looking ornaments.

8. Cartwheeling Spider
It might not seem that a species of spider native to the sand dunes of the Namib Desert in southern Africa would have much to worry about. But the Golden Wheel Spider has had to adapt to protect itself from its predators, namely spider wasps. Because this species of spiders builds burrows below the surface of sand dunes and wanders around the desert in search of insects, they are more susceptible to being preyed upon.

7. Spitting Spiders
With 239 species that span across the globe, spitting spiders do not sit and wait for predators to come for them. Armed with a venomous silk spray, these spiders have similar coloring and long delicate legs that resemble the more dangerous brown recluse spider.

6. The Brazilian Wandering Spider
Known as the world's deadliest spider, the Brazilian Wandering Spider is similar to the Golden Wheel Spider in that it doesn't build a web but instead walks the jungle floor at night looking for prey.

5. The Bolas Spider
The Bolas Spider might just be one of the most remarkable we've ever discovered. One of its superpowers is the ability to lure moth species by mimicking the pheromones they give off. Even more incredible is the fact that the spiders are able to change the blend of pheromone through the night as a way to attract the species that are active at different times. Pretty advanced, don’t you think?

4. The Funnel Web Spider
The Funnel Web Spider can be found in Australia, and as most animals from there, it is anything but average. At least, its lair isn’t. If you happen to be in the humid forest regions of the east coast and highlands of Australia or maybe even in the drier open forests of the Western Slopes, be sure to look down.

3. The Goliath Bird-Eating Tarantula
With a leg span about the size of a dinner plate, (more than 12 inches), the Goliath Bird Eating Spider is the second largest spider in the world, after the giant huntsman. These brown spiders have a lot of special hairs called urticating hair covering their bodies which are extremely irritating. They will off these microscopic barbed hairs and aim straight for the eye which is great for defense.

2. The Green Lynx Spider
The Green Lynx spider is one of the largest native species of spiders found in the United States. The adult spiders can spit venom up to eight times its body length. The spray tastes bitter and irritates the human eye, as people have shared from experience. When a World War II era soldier described seeing one of these spiders, it actually sprayed him in the eyes and cause impaired vision.

1. Fringed Jumping Spider
The Fringed Jumping Spider is a skilled hunter from Australia with several superpowers. For one, they are able to leap up to 50 times their own body length! Found in habitats ranging from the Savannah Woodland to the rain forest, these spiders make their webs among rocks, in bark or foliage.

9. LIONS SAVE KIDNAPPED SCHOOLGIRL
In rural southwestern Ethiopia in June 2005, a twelve-year-old girl was kidnapped by seven men while on her way home from school. The men were attempting to force her into a marriage she did not want and was obviously too young for. The girl’s captors held her in a hut and attempted to relocate her a week later as they evaded the police, but to their surprise they were chased away from the girl by three lions.

8. DEER CHASES ATTACKER AWAY
In February 2012, an Oxford, Ohio woman was attacked and dragged behind a building after leaving a party. The assailant, who seemed intent on robbing the woman, tried choking her with her purse straps.

7. BEAVER COMFORTS ORPHANED BOY
A young boy from Ontario, Canada named Rheal Guindon was camping with his parents when they decided to go fishing. Rheal stayed behind on the shore while his mom and dad headed out on a boat. Within minutes of their departure, the boat Rheal’s parents were using tipped and sank. Rheal helplessly watched from land as they drowned.

6. GORILLA SAVES 3-YEAR-OLD BOY
In August 1996, one parent’s worst nightmare came true when their three-year-old tumbled into a gorilla exhibit at the Brookfield Zoo in Illinois. As the boy lied on the concrete below, surrounded by some seven gorillas, zoo visitors panicked and cried out for help.

5. DOLPHINS SAVE LIFEGUARDS FROM SHARKS
In 2004, lifeguard Rob Howes and three teenage lifeguards, including his daughter, decided to take a swim at Ocean Beach near Whangarei, New Zealand. Suddenly, they were encircled by seven bottlenose dolphins. A dolphin followed Howes and one of the lifeguards as they drifted from the rest of the group.

4. WHALE SAVES WOMAN FROM SHARK
Nan Hauser was swimming off the Cook Islands in October 2017 when a humpback whale seemingly randomly appeared nearby. The whale repeatedly bumped into the woman with its head and belly and attempted to carry her on its belly, back, and head. It also tried to put Nan under its pectoral fin several times.

3. BEAR SAVES MAN FROM MOUNTAIN LION
In 2012, a 69-year-old northern California man named Robert Biggs was attacked by a mountain lion while hiking. During one of his many gold-panning and hiking trips to Whiskey Flats, he encountered a mother bear, her yearling, and her cub on a stream bank.

2. DOLPHINS SAVE FISHERMAN
In 2002, a 36-year-old Australian fisherman named Grant Dickson was sailing off the coast of Queensland when his fishing boat sank. The boat went down in rough waters near Dunk Island after its nets got caught on seaweed.

10. Giant Spiders
The Amazon is known for its incredible ecological diversity, but there are stories of mysterious animals and gathering evidence has proved to be somewhat elusive. 10. No. 26 Wonderbread Car
Talladega Nights was a 2006 movie starring Will Ferrell that saw him take on the role of Ricky Bobby who follows his dream of driving fast by competing in NASCAR. With a number of cameo appearances from a range of comedians, the most recognizable thing from the movie has to be the No. 26 Wonderbread Car that he competed with.

Although Ian Fleming is most famous as the creator of James Bond, he wrote another book that would become a cult sensation too- Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Starring Dick Van Dyke, it was about a crazy inventor who rebuilt his family’s car, and the story he told them of a villainous baron who wanted the car for himself.

8. Lotus Esprit
Of all the cars that have been used in James Bond movies, the most iconic was the Lotus Esprit S1 sports car that was in The Spy Who Loved Me. It's known as ‘Wet Nellie' and even though it was only on screen for 3 and a half minutes, it's been highly sought after… not least because it was THE car that turned into a submarine.

7. Sir Tow Mater
Sir Tow Mater is one of the main characters in Disney Pixar’s ‘Cars’ that was released in 2006. He was inspired by a 56-57 international harvester tow truck and was voiced by Larry The Cable Guy.

6. Shaggin’ Wagon
The Farrelly brothers are renowned in the world of comedic movies, but the one that first made a name for them was Dumb and Dumber, which starred Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels. They played Lloyd and Harry, two rather un-intelligent , but fun-loving men, who had a van that Harry used for his dog grooming job.

5. 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse
2001’s The Fast and the Furious spawned a franchise that so far has included 9 movies, and while it’s featured a number of high profile names, the true stars, at least in the beginning, were the cars. In particular, the iconic Kawasaki Green 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse that was driven by Paul Walker’s character.

4. General Lee
The Dukes of Hazard was a tv show that ran between 1979 and 1985 and went on for a movie adaptation as well. Following the adventures of the Duke boys, one of the most recognizable parts of the show was its car, the General Lee. It was an orange 1969 Dodge Charger, with a confederate flag on the roof and a horn that played the first 12 notes of the song ‘Dixie'.

3. Jurassic Park Jeep
Jurassic Park was the highest-grossing movie of 1993 because of its ingenious story and cutting edge special effects, and led to a number of sequels, spin-offs, and countless items of merchandise. For car lovers, the original movie had two in particular that were solidified in history… the Ford Explorer tour vehicles that ran along electric tracks, and the Jeep Wrangler staff vehicles.

2. ECTO-1
When Ghostbusters was released in 1984, nothing like it had ever been seen before and it catapulted the lead actors into stardom… but without ECTO-1 to drive around New York, calls to the emergency line might well have gone unanswered.

The DeLorean time machine car from Back to the Future is arguably the most recognizable car from any movie ever made. Based on a DMC DeLorean, which was the only model the company ever made, very little was changed for the production of the movies apart from the style of the hood and the wheels.

10. Liopleurodon
Just imagine what it’s like to swim alongside a creature that’s many times your size!! Pretty intimidating but still nothing like these guys. The Liopleurodon was one of the largest sea monsters that ever lived. At about 80 feet long, it was the alpha predator in the shallow waters during the late Jurassic period, where it hunted crocodiles and giant fish.

9. Kerygmachela Kierkegaardi
The K Kierkegaardi is a strange creature that lived about 540 million years ago, and recent discoveries of their fossils have led to a completely new understanding of how animals’ brains have developed!!

8. Dakosaurus
Dakosaurus lived during the Jurassic and Cretaceous eras about 145 million years ago. The species is often referred to as ‘Godzilla’ because of the deep shape of its skull, but it was more like a large crocodile that lived in the saltwater of the oceans. Growing up to 16 feet long, it had paddle shaped flippers to help propel itself through the water, as well as a fluke at the end of its tail to provide extra power.

7. Ichthyosaur
Ichthyosaurs lived during the Triassic period until around 90 million years ago, when they mysteriously became extinct- about 25 million years before the event that wiped out the dinosaurs. Meaning ‘fish lizards’, Ichthyosaurs are actually thought to have evolved from a land reptile that moved back into the water, but it’s not yet clear what its precise ancestry is.

6. The Tully Monster
If you were asked to design the strangest animal you could, then I bet you wouldn’t come up with something as weird as this odd looking creature, called the Tully Monster. Fossil findings suggest that it lived in the shallow waters of the Eastern United States about 300 million years ago, with remains having been found in the Mazon Creek fossil beds in Illinois.

5. Kronosaurus
The Kronosaurus was a short necked pliosaur that lived during the Cretaceous era, just over 100 million years ago. They grew to around 32 feet long, 9 feet of which was its huge head- big enough that it could fit an entire human inside it! Remains have been found in Australia and Colombia, where it would have been the alpha predator of its time.

4. Anomalocaridids
If you’re squeamish about creepy crawlies, then this next ancient sea monster is probably going to be your least favourite of all. Anomalocaridids were shrimp-like creatures that, for millions of years, were the largest predators in the oceans. They had soft jointed bodies, and spiny limbs to allow them to catch small prey like worms.

3. Tylosaurus
The Tylosaurus- a name which means “knob lizard”, was one of the largest mosasaurs to ever live. They swam in the oceans during the Cretaceous era, about 70 million years ago, and grew to up to 50 feet long. They were different to earlier species of mosasaur that propelled themselves through the water with flippers and, instead, had giant tails that would do all of the work.

2. Luskhan Itilensis
The Luskhan Itilensis is a new species of Pliosaur that was only recently identified in 2017 from fossils found 15 years earlier in the Volga river in Russia. Rather than being dinosaurs, they were actually distant relatives of turtles- with 4 large flippers, big heads, powerful jaws, and very sharp teeth.

1. Leedsichthys
Growing up to 55 feet long, the Leedsichthys is thought to be the largest fish that has ever lived. (So this answer was actually pretty tricky!!) It’s difficult to know much about it, though, because only fragments of this giant creature have ever been found. At one point is was believed to be twice the size, but even the recent reduction in estimates based on new finds makes it bigger than today’s whale sharks, and by far the biggest bony fish that’s ever been discovered.
