10. Bugged Bugs
The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, also known as DARPA, is known for its involvement in cutting edge projects, and in 2006 they invited scientists to submit proposals for how to create insect cyborgs.
9. Operation Acoustic Kitty
The CIA has worked on a number of strange projects over time, but one of the weirdest from the 1960s was known as ‘Operation Acoustic Kitty'. Run by the Directorate of Science and Technology branch, its aim was to use cats to spy on Soviet embassies during the cold war.
8. The Hartlepool Monkey
Animals are often suspected of spying, but there are few examples of ones being captured and punished for their acts. One of the first happened in the 19th century in the English town of Hartlepool. A French ship was spotted sinking off the coast, and residents went down to the beach where they found wreckage and the sole survivor- the ship’s monkey dressed in military uniform.
7. Pigeons
Pigeons have long been trained to deliver important messages and were vital during the second world war when they were used to carry coded texts from Nazi-held territory. Nowadays carrier pigeons are mainly for hobbyists, though, but they occasionally make the headlines for their involvement in other activities.
6. Squirrels
You may think of squirrels as being furry and innocent, but in 2007 there were claims that the rodents were being used in an advanced spy network to infiltrate Iran. Authorities detained as many as a dozen of the creatures on the border, each of which was claimed to have been fitted with advanced listening devices.
5. Lizards
In 2018, Iran again claimed that animals were being used to spy on the country… but this time it was lizards. According to a high ranking official in the military, reptiles had been used for a number of years and were often brought in by people claiming to be entering the country on aid missions.
4. Bat Bombs
In the second world war, researchers tried to utilise everything at their disposal to help their side come out on top… whether it be bouncing bombs, rockets, or nuclear weapons. Some attempts were more unusual, though, such as a plan submitted to the US government by a Pennsylvanian dentist who believed that bats were the secret to dealing a devastating blow to the Japanese.
3. Stork
More commonly associated with peaceful missions like delivering babies in Disney movies, a stork hit the headlines in 2013 under suspicion of being a spy. An Egyptian fisherman near the town of Qena, to the south of the country, noticed something unusual about the bird… it had a strange metallic device attached to it that he suspected to be a camera.
2. Beluga Whale
In April of 2019, a fisherman in Norway noticed a Beluga whale was harassing his boat in a way he had never seen before. It was a surprisingly tame whale, and when he managed to take a closer look he found that it was wearing a harness that said ‘Equipment of St. Petersburg’. After reporting it, scientists were able to track down the whale and remove the tight harness, which they also found had space to attach a GoPro camera to.

They’re often thought of as the most intelligent animals in the ocean, so it’s perhaps no surprise that dolphins have a long history of involvement with Navies around the world. The US has had a program since the 1960s that has sought to train marine mammals to perform tasks such as detecting, finding, and retrieving targets in murky or very deep water.
